Canton of Berne

Lauterbrunnen sits at the base of a sheer-walled glacial valley in the Bernese Oberland, flanked by cliffs from which 72 waterfalls descend. The valley floor remains in shadow for much of the day, creating dramatic contrast between the sunlit walls and the dark meadows below. Staubbach Falls plunges 297 metres directly behind the village, one of the highest free-falling waterfalls in Europe.

The Matterhorn rises to 4,478 metres on the border between Switzerland and Italy, its near-perfect pyramidal silhouette making it one of the most recognisable peaks in the Alps. Photographers gather at Riffelsee lake near Rotenboden station to capture the mountain reflected in calm water, particularly at dawn when light warms the summit. The classic north-face view from Zermatt village frames the peak above timber chalets.

Canton of the Grisons

St. Moritz is an alpine resort at 1,822 metres in the Upper Engadine valley of Graubünden, with Lake St. Moritz at its centre and the Suvretta and Corviglia ski areas above. The town hosted the Winter Olympics in 1928 and 1948, and the Cresta Run ice track has operated on the slopes above since 1884. The Engadine light, characterised by intense clarity at high altitude, has made the region a destination for painters and photographers since the nineteenth century.

Lake Geneva, known in French as Lac Léman, is the largest lake in the Alps and one of the largest in Western Europe, shared between Switzerland and France. The Swiss northern shore is lined with vineyards, including the UNESCO-listed Lavaux terraces, behind which the Vaud Pre-Alps rise steeply. The lake's surface varies from deep blue to silver depending on light and season, with the Jet d'Eau fountain at Geneva among its most photographed features.
