Interlaken occupies an isthmus between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz at the northern entrance to the Bernese Oberland, with the Jungfrau massif rising directly to the south. The town functions as the main transport hub for the Oberland region and has served as a tourist centre since the early nineteenth century. The Höhematte meadow in the town centre frames a famous southward view toward the Jungfrau on clear days.
