South Sulawesi, Indonesia
A highland region in the interior of South Sulawesi, Tana Toraja is home to the Torajan people, whose elaborate funeral ceremonies, cliffside burial sites, and distinctive boat-shaped tongkonan houses create one of Indonesia's most remarkable cultural landscapes. Bodies of the deceased are placed in caves or hung in coffins on cliff faces at sites such as Lemo and Londa, while large effigies called tau tau stand in rock galleries to represent the honored dead. The surrounding landscape of terraced rice paddies and volcanic peaks adds to the region's visual character.
