Chapter I · Rajasthan · 86 places

Rajasthan

Mehrangarh rises nearly 130 metres above Jodhpur on a sheer sandstone escarpment, making it one of the largest and most imposing forts in India. Its ramparts offer sweeping views over the blue-washed old city below, and the palaces within contain an exceptional collection of palanquins, armour, and royal textiles. The fort's eastern face catches warm morning light that sets the honey-coloured stone aglow.

Chapter II · Karnataka · 85 places

Karnataka

Hampi is the ruined capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, spread across a dramatic boulder landscape on the south bank of the Tungabhadra River in northern Karnataka. The UNESCO-listed site encompasses hundreds of temples, market streets, royal enclosures, and water pavilions distributed over roughly 36 square kilometres of terrain defined by vast granite boulders. The Virupaksha Temple and Vittala Temple complex — containing the famous stone chariot and musical pillars — are the most architecturally elaborate surviving structures.

Chapter III · Tamil Nadu · 76 places

Tamil Nadu

Ooty, officially Udhagamandalam, is a hill station at 2,240 metres in the Nilgiri district of Tamil Nadu, established as a British administrative retreat in the early nineteenth century. The Nilgiri Mountain Railway, a UNESCO-listed rack-and-pinion line, connects the town to Mettupalayam on the plains through a series of steep gradients, curved viaducts, and sixteen tunnels. The surrounding Nilgiris are characterised by rolling grasslands and shola forest patches interspersed with tea and eucalyptus plantations.

Chapter IV · National Capital Territory of Delhi · 75 places

National Capital Territory of Delhi

Jama Masjid is the largest mosque in India, constructed between 1644 and 1656 under Emperor Shah Jahan, with a courtyard capable of holding 25,000 worshippers. Its three onion-shaped domes of striped black and white marble and two minarets of red sandstone and marble form the architectural climax of Shah Jahan's Old Delhi. Climbing the southern minaret provides a sweeping view over the density of Old Delhi's rooftops toward the Red Fort to the east.
