Spiti Valley is a cold high-desert mountain valley in northeastern Himachal Pradesh, running along the Spiti River at elevations between 3,800 and 4,500 metres. Stark eroded landscapes of brown and grey ridges, punctuated by ancient monasteries, mani walls, and small villages of flat-roofed mud-brick houses, define its visual character. The valley is cut off by snow for roughly six months each year and accessible by two mountain roads that are among the most dramatic drives in the subcontinent.
