Jaisalmer Fort is a twelfth-century living citadel built of golden-yellow Thar sandstone that seems to blend seamlessly with the surrounding desert at dusk. One of the few forts in the world that remains inhabited, its narrow lanes shelter Jain temples, havelis, and markets within the same medieval walls that once guarded a caravan crossroads. The fort is particularly striking photographed at sunset when the stone takes on the colour of the surrounding dunes.
