Diskit Monastery is the oldest and largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in the Nubra Valley, built on a ridge overlooking the Shyok River. A giant statue of Maitreya Buddha erected in the early twenty-first century stands on the hillside above the monastery complex and is visible from kilometres away across the valley floor. The monastery's prayer halls contain old thangkas, drums, and wall paintings of deities and demons.
