Shimla is the capital of Himachal Pradesh and one of India's most famous hill stations, established as the summer capital of British India in the nineteenth century. Its Victorian and Edwardian architecture — the Gaiety Theatre, the Viceregal Lodge, and the Indian Institute of Advanced Study — cluster along a forested ridge at about 2,200 metres. The pedestrian-only Mall Road and the historic Christ Church form the social and architectural heart of the town.
