Dashashwamedh Ghat is the principal and oldest ghat on the Ganges riverfront in Varanasi, where the nightly Ganga Aarti ceremony draws large crowds of worshippers and visitors. Rows of priests perform synchronised fire rituals with large brass lamps, accompanied by bells and chanting, against the backdrop of temple spires and river boats. The ghat is busiest and most photogenic in the hour before dawn, when bathers, priests, and flower sellers gather in the river mist.
