Rishikesh is a pilgrimage and yoga centre on the Ganges River where the river exits the Himalayan foothills into the plains, at approximately 372 metres. The town is internationally associated with yoga, meditation, and Ayurvedic study, and hosts dozens of ashrams along the riverbanks. The suspension footbridges of Ram Jhula and Lakshman Jhula, strung with temple bells and prayer flags over the swift green Ganges, are the defining visual images of the town.
