Chand Baori is a ninth-century stepwell at Abhaneri village in Rajasthan, descending 13 storeys through 3,500 narrow steps arranged in a precise geometric lattice. The sheer symmetry of the stepped walls, converging toward the water at the base, creates a vertiginous optical effect that is difficult to appreciate fully until standing at the rim. Photographers favour the cooler morning hours when shadows sharpen the geometry of the terraces.
