The Aletsch Glacier is the longest glacier in the Alps, stretching approximately 23 kilometres through the Valais and forming part of the Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its curved medial moraines — dark stripes of rock debris running the length of the ice — are a defining visual feature seen from the Aletsch Arena viewpoints at Bettmerhorn and Eggishorn. The glacier is retreating measurably each decade, making its current extent historically significant.
