Wengen is a car-free village at 1,274 metres on a sun-facing shelf above the Lauterbrunnen Valley, accessible only by the Wengernalp Railway from Lauterbrunnen. The village looks across the valley at Mürren and up toward the Jungfrau, with the famous Lauberhorn downhill ski race descending past the village each January. Its relative quietness compared to Grindelwald and Zermatt has made it a preferred retreat for generations of British visitors.
