Lake Lucerne, known in German as Vierwaldstättersee (Lake of the Four Forest Cantons), is an irregularly shaped lake of 114 square kilometres surrounded by forested limestone mountains and the Rigi and Pilatus massifs. Its multiple arms extend into different valleys, each with a distinct character ranging from sheltered bays with orchards to open reaches exposed to Alpine wind. Historic paddle steamers have operated on its surface since 1837.
