This twin-towered church above the lake is the most important religious building in Lucerne and the successor to a monastery founded in the eighth century. The present structure was rebuilt after a fire in the seventeenth century, keeping its late-Gothic towers while adding a Renaissance nave. Inside are richly carved choir stalls, ornate altars and one of the largest church organs in Switzerland, prized for its concerts. An arcaded cemetery with tombs of patrician families surrounds the building on its terrace overlooking the water.
