The Weinmarkt is a picturesque medieval square in the old town of Lucerne, once the site of wine trading and later of religious passion plays performed on temporary stages. Frescoed façades and a Gothic fountain crowned by a warrior figure surround the small cobbled space. Overhanging upper storeys and painted signs give it a storybook character. Tucked among the lanes near the river, it is quieter than the busier waterfront and rewards visitors who wander in to admire the painted house fronts.
