Standing on the left bank of the Reuss, the Jesuit Church of Lucerne is the first large Baroque church built in Switzerland, begun in 1666. Its twin onion-domed towers and pale facade dominate the riverfront, while inside a bright single nave is decorated with pink stucco, ceiling frescoes and a high altar of marble. A side chapel preserves relics and the robe of Brother Klaus, the country's patron saint. The interplay of its curved white forms and gilded detail makes it one of the finest religious interiors of its period in the region.
