Lucerne is a city on the western end of Lake Lucerne where the Reuss River exits the lake, with Mount Pilatus and Rigi visible from the old town waterfront. The Chapel Bridge, a covered wooden bridge dating to the fourteenth century, crosses the Reuss and serves as the city's defining landmark. The preserved old town retains medieval painted facades on its guild houses and is among the most visited urban centres in Switzerland.
