Rigi is an isolated limestone massif rising to 1,797 metres between Lake Lucerne, Lake Zug, and Lake Lauerz, known as the Queen of the Mountains for its position commanding views of all three lakes simultaneously. The Vitznau-Rigi Bahn, which opened in 1871 as Europe's first mountain rack railway, still carries visitors to the summit. Sunrise from Rigi Kulm, with the Swiss Mittelland fog below and Alps above, has been a celebrated viewing experience since the nineteenth century.
