Bali

Terraced rice paddies carved into a steep river valley north of Ubud, Tegallalang is among Bali's most photographed agricultural landscapes. Subak irrigation channels direct water across tiers of vivid green and gold paddies, and the morning light striking the stepped fields from the east creates particularly striking images. Roadside cafes line the ridge above, offering elevated vantage points over the valley.

Chapter III · Central Java · 33 places

Central Java

A volcanic plateau at over 2,000 meters elevation in the highlands of Central Java, the Dieng Plateau is home to some of the oldest surviving Hindu temples in Indonesia, dating to the 7th and 8th centuries. Active volcanic features including colored crater lakes, bubbling mud pools, and fumarole fields sit in close proximity to the temple groupings, creating an unusual combination of geological and archaeological interest. Morning mist and cold temperatures are characteristic of the plateau, which produces some of Java's finest Cavendish potatoes and aromatic crops.

Chapter IV · East Java · 32 places

East Java

An active stratovolcano rising within the Tengger caldera, Mount Bromo is one of Java's most visited volcanic landscapes. The classic viewpoint at Penanjakan ridge frames the smoking crater against a sea of sand and neighbouring peaks, with pre-dawn visits timed to catch orange light breaking over Mount Semeru in the background. The surrounding Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park adds context through highland Tenggerese villages and sweeping highland plateaux.
