An active volcano in the Kintamani highlands of northeast Bali, Mount Batur sits within a vast caldera also containing Lake Batur. The pre-dawn summit hike, beginning around 4:00 am, is one of Bali's most popular trekking experiences, with sunrise breaking across the caldera rim revealing the lake below and distant Mount Agung to the east. The 1,717-meter summit trail passes recent lava flows from the last eruption cycles of the 20th and 21st centuries.
