One of the world's most active volcanoes, Mount Merapi rises to 2,930 meters on the border between Central Java and the Special Region of Yogyakarta, approximately 30 kilometers north of the city center. Its frequent eruptions — including major events in 1994, 2006, and 2010 — have shaped the landscape with thick lava deposits and pyroclastic flow channels on its southern flanks. Jeep tours traversing the volcanic wasteland left by the 2010 eruption, along with the lava tour route past the deserted village of Kinahrejo, have become significant visitor experiences.
