The Ullen Sentalu Museum, set on the cool slopes of Mount Merapi north of Yogyakarta, is devoted to the art and culture of the Javanese royal courts. Visitors are guided through a series of dimly lit galleries and garden pavilions built of volcanic stone, where paintings, batik, letters and photographs illuminate the lives of princesses and rulers of the Yogyakarta and Surakarta palaces. The atmospheric route, ending in a leafy courtyard, evokes the refinement of court society.
