The world's largest volcanic lake and the site of a supervolcanic eruption approximately 74,000 years ago, Lake Toba spans over 1,100 square kilometers in the highlands of North Sumatra. A large island called Samosir sits at its center, home to the Batak Toba people whose traditional architecture, intricate carvings, and ceremonial culture give the area significant ethnographic interest. The lake's cool highland climate, calm blue waters, and scenic caldera walls make it one of Sumatra's defining natural landmarks.
