A village on the eastern fringe of Gunung Leuser National Park, Bukit Lawang lies along the Bohorok River and is the primary access point for jungle trekking into one of the last habitats of wild Sumatran orangutans. Multi-day guided treks penetrate deeper into the forest canopy, where encounters with orangutans, Thomas leaf monkeys, and hornbills are common. The village was largely rebuilt after a devastating flash flood in 2003 and now hosts a small community of guesthouses and guiding cooperatives.
