Known as the Mother Temple of Bali, Pura Besakih is the largest and most important Hindu temple complex on the island, encompassing over 80 separate temples spread across the southwestern slopes of Mount Agung. The complex has been a place of worship since at least the 10th century and serves as the spiritual center for all Balinese Hindus. During major festivals, thousands of worshippers in traditional dress ascend the terraced grounds in ceremonies that extend across multiple days.
