Chapter I · Vienna · 80 places

Vienna

The summer residence of the Habsburg imperial family for more than 250 years, Schönbrunn stands in the western districts of Vienna and comprises a 1,441-room palace complex surrounded by 160 hectares of formal gardens. The gardens rise to the Gloriette colonnade on the hill above, from which the palace and the Vienna skyline are visible together. The complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, encompasses Europe's oldest zoo, founded in 1752 within the palace grounds.

Chapter II · Tyrol · 70 places

Tyrol

The capital of Tyrol sits in a broad Inn River valley enclosed by the Nordkette range to the north and the Patscherkofel massif to the south, creating an alpine urban environment unusually accessible on foot. The medieval Altstadt features the Golden Roof, a late-Gothic oriel window covered with gilded copper tiles commissioned by Emperor Maximilian I. A funicular from the city centre reaches the Nordkette ridge at 2,256 metres in under 30 minutes, providing immediate access to high alpine terrain.

Chapter III · Lower Austria · 63 places

Lower Austria

A 36-kilometre reach of the Danube between Melk and Krems in Lower Austria where the river carves through the Bohemian Massif, the Wachau is a UNESCO World Heritage Cultural Landscape. Terraced vineyards above the river produce a celebrated dry Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, while ruined fortresses crown the hilltops above riverside villages of apricot orchards and Baroque parish churches. Dürnstein, with its ruined castle where Richard the Lionheart was imprisoned in 1192, is the most storied of the valley villages.

Chapter IV · Salzburg · 61 places

Salzburg

The largest national park in the Alps, Hohe Tauern protects over 1,800 square kilometres of the central Eastern Alps in the states of Salzburg, Carinthia, and Tyrol. The park encompasses more than 300 glaciers, 300 three-thousand-metre peaks, and the Krimml Waterfalls — the highest in Austria. Brown bears, bearded vultures, and golden eagles inhabit its protected valleys and high alpine zones.
