A Baroque palace complex commissioned by Prince Eugene of Savoy and completed in the early 18th century, the Belvedere consists of two main buildings — the Upper and Lower Belvedere — connected by formal French-style gardens on a gently sloping site in Vienna's third district. The Upper Belvedere now houses the Austrian Gallery with one of the most important collections of Gustav Klimt paintings, including 'The Kiss.' The view from the upper terrace over the garden to the Vienna cityscape beyond is one of the defining compositions of the Austrian Baroque.
