This war memorial on the Schwarzenbergplatz in Vienna honours the Soviet soldiers who died liberating the city from Nazi forces in 1945. Unveiled the same year, it features a tall curved colonnade behind a bronze statue of a Red Army soldier standing atop a high pedestal, holding a flag and shield. A large fountain plays in front of the semicircle of columns. The monument has remained standing under a post-war treaty obligation amid the surrounding grand architecture.
