The Stadtpark is a public park in central Vienna, opened in 1862 as the first municipal park laid out beyond the city's demolished fortifications. Designed in an informal English style, it straddles the small Wien river and is crossed by ornamental bridges. The park is famous for its many monuments to Viennese composers and artists, above all the gilded statue of Johann Strauss II framed by a marble arch. A restored Art Nouveau river portal and a curved pavilion add to its nineteenth-century charm.
