Music shaped Vienna as surely as stone: Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert all worked in the city that led European music from the Classical age into the 20th century. From Celtic and Roman roots it grew into the Baroque capital of a great empire, and the sweeping 19th-century Ringstrasse later wrapped the medieval core around St Stephen's Cathedral in grand public buildings, monuments and parks. UNESCO inscribed Vienna's historic centre in 2001.
