This short but celebrated street runs from the Graben to the gate of the Hofburg, closing on the copper dome of the palace at its far end. Once the site of a charcoal market, it became Vienna's most exclusive shopping address, lined with luxury boutiques and jewellers. At its heart stands the imperial confectioner Demel, whose window displays of cakes and sugar sculptures draw a steady crowd. The framed view down the street toward the palace dome is one of the most photographed compositions in the inner city.
