The Graben is one of Vienna's grandest streets, a broad pedestrian promenade following the line of the moat that once ran outside the Roman camp. Lined with elegant shops and palaces, it centres on the Plague Column, a swirling Baroque monument of gilded clouds and saints raised in thanks after an epidemic of the 1670s. Two ornate public fountains and the Art Nouveau public conveniences designed by Adolf Loos add to its interest. Cafes spill onto the paving, and it links the cathedral square with the imperial quarter.
