The Dachstein is a high limestone plateau on the borders of Styria, Upper Austria, and Salzburg, reaching 2,995 metres at its highest point. The plateau is underlain by extensive cave systems including the Dachstein Ice Cave and the Mammoth Cave, among the largest of their kind in the Alps. A cable car from Ramsau am Dachstein delivers access to the summit area, where views encompass Hallstatt, the Salzkammergut lakes, and the Northern Limestone Alps.
