Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape

Salt made this alpine valley wealthy long before Rome existed: miners were working the deposits above Hallstatt by the 2nd millennium BC, and the town later lent its name to an entire era of European prehistory, the Iron Age Hallstatt culture. Wedged between lake and mountain beneath the Dachstein massif, its handsome architecture reflects millennia of the salt trade, which sustained the region into the mid-20th century. UNESCO inscribed the Salzkammergut cultural landscape in 1997.
