A lakeside resort town on the western shore of the Zeller See in the Pinzgau valley, Zell am See is flanked by the Schmittenhöhe mountain to the west and, across the lake, by the glacial terrain of the Kitzsteinhorn. The combination of swimming lake, ski area, and glacier access within a short radius has made the town one of Austria's most versatile year-round destinations. The medieval town tower and the Romanesque Church of St Hippolytus on a small peninsula give the compact old town a recognisable silhouette.
