A glacial lake in the Salzkammergut lake district straddling the border of Salzburg state and Upper Austria, Wolfgangsee is framed by the Schafberg mountain to the north and the Sparber peak to the south. The village of St. Wolfgang on the north shore contains the Late Gothic Pilgrimage Church with its celebrated Pacher altarpiece of 1481. The narrow-gauge Schafbergbahn steam rack railway ascends from the village to the Schafberg summit at 1,783 metres, offering panoramic lake views.
