Dominating the city of Salzburg from its perch on the Festungsberg, Hohensalzburg is one of the largest and best-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe, founded in 1077 by Archbishop Gebhard. The interior includes the state rooms of the archbishops, furnished with original late-Gothic and Renaissance furnishings, and a small fortress museum. A funicular from the old town provides access, though the climb on foot through the Nonnberg area offers rewarding views over the rooftops and domes of Salzburg.
