This grand palace on the Residenzplatz was the seat of the prince-archbishops who ruled Salzburg for centuries as an independent church state. Rebuilt in Baroque splendour from the late sixteenth century, its state rooms carry stucco, frescoes and gilding, and an upper gallery holds European paintings from the Renaissance onward. The young Mozart performed in its halls. The palace forms one side of the square with its great marble fountain, linking the cathedral to the archbishops' apartments through arches.
