Housed in the New Residence on Mozartplatz, this museum presents the history, art and culture of Salzburg and its surrounding province. Its galleries move from Celtic and Roman finds through the age of the prince-archbishops to the Romantic rediscovery of the city as a stage set of towers and domes. Period rooms, paintings and models trace how the compact old town took shape. The building's tower carries the Glockenspiel, a carillon of thirty-five bells that plays melodies by Mozart and Haydn several times a day across the square.
