Residenzplatz is the grand baroque square at the centre of Salzburg's old town, laid out around a monumental marble fountain carved with tritons and horses, one of the largest of its kind north of the Alps. The former archbishops' Residenz palace and the new Residence with its glockenspiel tower frame two sides, and the cathedral opens off a corner. Fiacres wait for passengers along the edge, and the square hosts a large Christmas market. It lies at the meeting point of the city's most important monuments.
