The Getreidegasse is the most famous street of Salzburg's old town, a narrow medieval lane running between tall merchant houses in the heart of the city. Its great charm lies in the ornate wrought-iron guild signs that hang above the shopfronts, once used to identify trades to a largely illiterate public and now advertising everything from bakeries to international chains. Vaulted passages lead off it into hidden courtyards. Mozart's birthplace stands halfway along, and the whole street lies within the protected historic centre of the city.
