At 3,798 metres, the Grossglockner is Austria's highest mountain and the highest point of the Eastern Alps, a double-summited pyramid of metamorphic rock on the Carinthia–Salzburg border. The normal route ascends via the Stüdlgrat from the Luckner hut, requiring ice-axe and crampon competence. Its prominence within a broad volcanic cirque, visible from hundreds of kilometres in clear conditions, has made it the emblematic peak of the Hohe Tauern range.
