The summer residence of the Habsburg imperial family for more than 250 years, Schönbrunn stands in the western districts of Vienna and comprises a 1,441-room palace complex surrounded by 160 hectares of formal gardens. The gardens rise to the Gloriette colonnade on the hill above, from which the palace and the Vienna skyline are visible together. The complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, encompasses Europe's oldest zoo, founded in 1752 within the palace grounds.
