Palace and Gardens of Schönbrunn

Vienna's answer to Versailles, Schönbrunn served the Habsburg emperors as their residence from the 18th century until the monarchy fell in 1918. The architects Fischer von Erlach and Nicolaus Pacassi shaped the palace, whose state rooms brim with decorative art, while the gardens contain the menagerie founded in 1752 — the world's oldest zoo. A Baroque total artwork of building and landscape, Schönbrunn was inscribed by UNESCO in 1996.
