The gardens of Schönbrunn Palace are an extensive baroque park on the western side of Vienna, laid out in the eighteenth century as the summer residence of the Habsburg emperors. Formal parterres, clipped hedges and long allées climb toward the Gloriette, a triumphal arcade crowning the hill with sweeping views back over the palace. The grounds hold a maze, a palm house, the oldest surviving zoo in the world and a Roman-style folly. The whole ensemble is protected as a World Heritage Site.
