The oldest still-operating theatre in Vienna, founded in 1788 in the Josefstadt district, was rebuilt in the 1820s and famously reopened with a Beethoven overture. Restored by director Max Reinhardt in the early twentieth century, its intimate auditorium is noted for its distinctive crystal chandelier and refined decoration. It remains devoted chiefly to spoken drama, from classics to modern plays. Set on a quiet street away from the Ringstrasse, it preserves an intimate Viennese tradition.
