Built in the 1880s on the Ringstrasse, the Austrian Parliament is a grand exercise in Greek Revival architecture chosen to evoke the birthplace of democracy. A wide ramp lined with statues of ancient historians leads up to a colonnaded portico, and before it stands a monumental fountain of Athena flanked by figures representing the empire's rivers. Recently restored, its chambers and glass-roofed halls can be visited on guided tours. The building housed the imperial council and now serves the national and federal councils of the republic.
