One of the largest cultural complexes in the world, the MuseumsQuartier occupies the former imperial stables behind Maria-Theresien-Platz in Vienna. Behind the long Baroque facade, modern cubes of dark and pale stone house the Leopold Museum, a museum of modern art and exhibition halls, threaded with cafes and courtyards. The main court, set with curving benches, is a gathering place from spring through autumn. Its mix of eighteenth-century architecture and contemporary insertions is widely imitated.
