The Burggarten is a landscaped park behind the Hofburg palace in central Vienna, laid out in the early nineteenth century as a private imperial garden and opened to the public after the fall of the monarchy. Its lawns and winding paths hold statues of Mozart, Emperor Franz Joseph and other figures. A grand curved glasshouse of iron and glass along one side, the Palmenhaus, now serves as a café and butterfly house. The garden offers a quiet green counterpoint to the surrounding imperial architecture.
